Roopkund Lake is a glacial lake in Indian Himalayas surrounded by glaciers and snow-clad mountains. It is situated at an altitude of 5,029 meters (16,499 feet) with a depth of about two meters in Chamoli district of the Indian state of Uttarakhand. Do you know why Roopkund is so popular amongst trekking community in Indian Himalayas? well, A Forest Officer during one of his expedition loses his balance and found thousands of human internal framework of bones on the verge of the lake and after that scientist from all over the world came here to resolve the mystery of Roopkund Lake. They carried out lots of research to find out the mystery behind the existence of skeletons near Roopkund lake, and at the end, they figured out that maybe these skeletons belong to some group of travelers who were trapped in a hailstorm and, that's why it is also known as a lake of skeletons. Of Course, you can not find them during winters when mountains and lakes are snow capped but when the summer arrive and snow melts you can see them at lakes bottom and this is the reason, Roopkund has become so much popular for trekking in India. Roopkund trek starts from Lohajung, a small beautiful village, located in Chamoli district in Indian Himalayas. Ideal elevation of about 2350 meters & the magical glimpse of the mountains makes Lohajung, starting point for Roopkund Trek. How to reach
The nearest airport is in Pantnagar. It is 140 kms away from Roopkund. Air India and Alliance Air have flights operational on the route.
We can’t deny that roadtrips are fun. If you are planning to go to Uttarakhand through road then leave early in the morning to beat the traffic. The buses are operational from New Delhi ISBT in Kashmiri gate. Private volvo buses are available if you want to travel in deluxe buses.
The nearest railway station to roopkund lake is Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. Rishikesh is well connected with road. Once you reach rishikesh, you can continue the journey by road until you reach Roopkund lake.
Elevated at the altitude of 15,696 ft. covering the distance of 53 Kms in 9 days requires a strong belief within oneself. Always make sure you are physically and mentally prepared to go to such great lengths when doing such big treks. However, the difficulty level comes down at times. Conserve your energy and always think ahead of the route. The weather conditions should be checked to tackle any problems that may hinder the trekking plans.
What to carry
Carry the essential list of equipments for trekking. Warm clothes, medical kit, water bottle, lighter, compass, backpack, food items like energy bar and dry fruits always come in handy and help the hiker stay relaxed and motivated.

Drive route: Kathgodam - Bheem Tal - Almora - Kausani - Gwaldam - Loharjung Explore Himalaya Guide will pick you after your arrival in Kathgodam and drive towards Loharjung in a Private vehicle. Pick up time is 07:00 am at Kathgodham railway station. Its 10-11 Hrs drive with little halts in between both the places. This incredible drive takes you through the region of Kumaon and covers deep valleys of Shivalik mountain ranges. On arriving at Loharjung, check into your pre-booked guest house. Enjoy your dinner and overnight stay talking with your newly made like minded friends.
Loharjung to Wan(8,000 ft) 1 hr drive then Wan to Ghaehroli Patal(10,000 ft) Trek 5.5 km 4 hr trek. After healthy breakfast in the morning, we will drive to wan village, it's one hour drive. From wan we will start hiking towards Ghaehroli Patal. you will find the cemented trail initially during half an hour’s ascent, and then a short descent to a small stream Neel Ganga. cross the cemented bridge made over Neel Ganga. the view is incredible here, The stream water here is icy cold but refreshing. From here start the beautiful ascent to the first camp site, Ghaeroli Patal. you will cross through Oak and Rhododendron forests. After an hour and a half, you will reach green landscape Ghaeroli Patal. Enjoy your meals and camping accommodation here.
wake up early in the morning, after half an hour of stretching exercise and healthy breakfast. we will start our trek towards Bedni Bugyal. The trail is ascending initially into the Oak and Rhododendron forest, after one and half hour of the trek, the oak and Rhododendron left behind you and the trails open up to a huge grassland. You will reach Ali Bugyal. After hiking 5 km on this picturesque grassland we will reach bedni bugyal. Enjoy your meals and overnight stay in camps.
Today is a rest day so we will start our day with body stretching exercises and yoga then after breakfast we will go for local area exploration You can also take rest on the campsite as this is Acclimatization day at Bedni Bugyal. From Bedni top you can easily see Maiktoli, Neelkanth, Chaukhambha and Mrigathuni.
Today we have to cover a distance of around 6 km. the trail is little ascending initially but after that it's a gradual descent. we will start our trek after breakfast in the morning. after 4 hrs of hike we will reach Patar Nachauni campsite. enjoy your meals and view from Patar Nachauni. overnight stay in camps.
Today we have to cover a distance of around 4 km, yes its short but it's a 3-hour steep ascent to Kalu Vinayak followed by a gradually descending trail to Bagubasa. So take your healthy breakfast after the yoga session in the morning. and start your trek towards Bagubasa. your Initial hike will be a zig-zag climb up the mountain side and will take you to 14,500 ft. Take 10-minute breaks after every 15 minutes hike. This is a crucial height so most trekkers feel the breathing problem as the air is thin. we will first hike to Kalu Vinayak, which is a thrilling experience and then the trail from Kalu Vinayak to Bhagwabasa is easy and gently sloping downwards.Reach Baguwasa and enjoy your meals with an overnight stay in huts/camp.
Today we will start our trek early in morning at 4.00 am. as in the early morning snow is hard. as the day passes snow becomes soft and your feet start sinking in. From Bagubasa it is a 5 kms gradual ascending walk to Roopkund. so if we are starting at 5 am then we will reach roopkund at 7 am. If the weather is clear we will also explore Junargali. Care must be taken while you are climbing to Junargali. A rope with you is very handy. Start your return by 9.00 am from Junargali, we will be back at Roopkund by 9.30 am and after little rest, we will start our hike back to Bagubasa Trekking down is little more difficult from Roopkund as the snowy sloping looks tricky and dangerous. By mid morning they are soft and slippery. Always trek down in small groups. You should reach Bhagwabasa within 2½ hours and then to Patar Nachauni. Enjoy your camping and meals at Patar Nachauni.
Today after breakfast we will retrace our path to Bedni Bugyal. Pass the Bedni campsite and run down into the oak and Rhododendron forest. On a clear day, you get incredible views of Mt Trishul. Rest here then, step into the flat oak forest on your right. Reach the river Neel Ganga. You can wash here your dirt of the week-long trek. After that, we will hike for last half hour climb to wan village. You will be transferred to Loharjung in a private vehicle.
After finishing the Roopkund trek at Loharjung, you can spend a day here. Loharjung is a beautiful place to relax and chill out after the high altitude trek, or enjoy a road-trip to Kathgodam with beautiful memory.
