Brahmatal trek goes through sprawling forests covered in snow at some points and wildly green at the others. You can consider this trek as one of the most adventurous trek routes in Indian Himalayas.
Trekking in this part of Uttarakhand offers you enchanting sights of the Himalayan Mountains (some of which are over 7000 meters) and valleys that are enough for the shutterbugs to keep going in the journey. The exhilarating Brahmatal trek starts from the base camp at Lohajung. You will do most of the trek on the snow, which makes it very exciting.
Once you cross the shadows of the trees, the full grandeur of the Himalayas hit you. Never-ending ridgelines, sprawling Bugiyals, High altitude lakes, snow on the trail and majestic peak views make it a compelling proposition for a winter trek.
Brahmatal is a hidden and secluded lake amidst the ridge, where Lord Brahma meditated according to the mythology. The frozen blue lake with the mighty Himalayan peaks overlooking it creates a mesmerizing and an unmatched experience.
The most amazing part of the trek is the view of Mt. Trisul and Nanda Ghunti peaks from such proximity. The 360-degree view from the summit is mesmerizing. This winter snow trek is one of its kind.

Arrive at Kathgodam railway station as early as 7 am, from there Lohajung is around 8-10 hours away. Drive from Kathgodam to Lohajung will take you through many beautiful locations like Bhimtal, Almora, Baijnath and Kausani. If you wish, you can halt at Kausani to admire the beautiful Himalayan mountain ranges in its background. Various high altitude peaks like Trishul, Maiktoli, Nanda Devi, Ghori Parvat, Nanda Khat, Hathi Parvat and Ghori Parvat are visible from the heights of Kasauni. As you will reach Lohajung, check-in to your pre-booked guest house for an overnight stay.
We will begin our day with little stretching excercises & soon sfter breakfast we will start trekking from Lohajung, Its well-marked stone trail. First in the list of places that would be coming on your trek is Mandoli village to your left. Here you can fill your bottles. As you will walk up, you will reach a beautiful valley(Kail valley). This beautiful valley is a result of the confluence of Pindari and Kail rivers. Coming next is Budla, which have an alignment of rhododendron trees built all around the homes. Crossing this point, trek on to find the next identifiable landmark, a 10 meter bridge, known as Linkgaad would be coming your way. After that, you will reach Begum, a restpoint on the way, overlooking a vast expanse of bugyals at distance. From here, you can enjoy the scenic beauty of Navali Bugyal. As your tiredness gets worn off, start with the trekking again. Reach Beakaltal, we will camp near Khopdaliya for our overnight stay.
After breakfast start trekking through a dense group of of oaks and rhododendrons over steep slopes for some time before finally coming out to a meadow. This is the meadow of Telandi. In the winter, you will find this meadow transformed into a vast snowfield and crossing the area is quite adventurous. The meadow continues till (11,500 ft.) the highest point, from where begins a slow descent to Brahmatal. Walk down the slope towards the Brahmatal Lake. you can witness The soaring peaks of Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, and others of the Greater Himalayas across the sky. We will camp few hundred away from the lake, overnight stay in a tent. Note: carry 2-3 litres of water since there are no water filling points on this trail.
Today's is the most important day of the trek, We will climb to the Brahmatal Top and then descend back to Brahmatal campsite. After breakfast we will start our trek early morning. The amazing view of the sunrise as we will start to ascend from Brahmatal base camp is breathtaking. Brahmatal is located at an altitude of 12,650 feet while Brahmatal campsite is located at 10,735 feet. The total trekking distance is around 7.5 km and it will take approximately 5-6 hours to complete the day’s journey, so you can just carry a daypack & leave your backpack in the camps as we will be returning to the same place. The mountains that are visible include Chaukhambha, Mandir, Mana, Nilgiri, Neelkant, Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, Maitoli to name some of the mountains of the Panchachuli range. We will spend some time at the summit and descend back to the base camp. Overnight stay at tents.
After having early morning breakfast, we will start our trek towards Lohajung village. The schedule for today is to descend from Brahmatal base camp to Lohajung which is located at an altitude of 7,662 feet above the sea level. The total trekking distance is 9 kilometres and it will take approximately 6-7 hours to complete this journey. We have to descend around 3,000 feet through oak and rhododendron trees. There is only one water point. So, make sure you have sufficient amount of filled bottles with yourself. You will reach Lohajung by evening. Overnight dinner and stay at Lohajung followed by a warm sleep and this will mark the end of the last night of the trek.
This is the last day of the trek. We will drive back to Kathgodam from Lohajung village.
